Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised an only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott completed her studies at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. She completed her secondary education the course of two years while also working. The hope was to become a English secondary school teacher. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of university. As a poet, she began performing in poetry performances live. Later, she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. At the Roots show, she revealed her artist status. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience as a performer on her participation in the Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. She was the first signed artist to label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
